John teaches and researches on media history and philosophy. He taught at the University of Iowa from 1986 up to his retirement in 2016.

At Iowa, he taught large lecture undergraduate classes such as Core Concepts in Communication Studies and Media and Society, smaller undergraduate classes such as Philosophy of Digital Media, and graduate classes on media theory and history.

He is now Professor of English & Film and Media Studies at Yale University.
